New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law requires a Report of Motor Vehicle Accident to be made for any road collision that results in the injury or death of anyone involved in the crash. Or one that results in property damage of more than $1,000. You must file this report yourself within ten days of the occurrence of the accident if no police officer is called to the scene to make the report. How to Obtain a Copy of Your Accident Report
Requesting a copy of an accident report is simplest when you do so within the first thirty days after the report was filed. You have two options if you would like to request within this timeframe. The first way is to make a request for the report from the precinct where the report was filed. This will involve filling out the Request for Copy of Collision Record and submitting it by mail or in person at the precinct. You must fill this form out as accurately as possible. The required information includes:- The name of the driver of the vehicle
- The name of the owner of the vehicle
- The vehicle’s license plate number
- The location of the accident
Requesting a Report after 30 Days
If more than 30 days have passed since the report was originally submitted, the accident report will have moved from the precinct to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. While you can still request the accident report online, you will no longer be able to do so in person or by mail from the precinct where you filed it.
