Preventing Slips and Falls in Winter

Preventing Slips and Falls in Winter

Winter is well underway in New York, and with it comes an increased risk of slip and fall accidents. Ice, sleet, and snow can cause slippery surfaces when traveling in the winter. While slipping on icy pavement might not seem serious, these accidents can cause severe injuries like broken bones. Here are some tips for preventing slips-and-falls in the winter.

Read our tips below on preventing slips and falls.

  • Wear the right shoes. While trendy boots are fashionable, they may not provide the best traction. Take a look at the soles of your favorite winter footwear. You might be better off with textured soles if the soles are flat. Flat-soled shoes will slide more easily on slippery surfaces. A textured, rubber-soled shoe will give you a better grip when walking in the winter.
  • Take your time. When you need to walk outside in winter, don’t rush! It’s best to move slowly and take careful, deliberate steps in slippery conditions. You may not notice a patch of ice until it’s too late, so look where you’re stepping. Sometimes it’s best to walk on snow or grass if the pavement or sidewalk is treacherous as these surfaces will offer more texture for your shoes to grip. On that note, give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination! Rushing any time of year can cause accidents, but in winter, the chances increase. Try to allow for extra time when traveling.
  • Pay attention. If possible, keep your hands free. Wear gloves instead of putting your hands in your pockets, and try not to carry too many bags or other items. If you slip, you will have a better chance of catching yourself. And try not to text as you walk – keep your eyes on the ground, not your phone!
  • Be careful when exiting your vehicle. Think about how you exit your car before you step outside. Use two feet, not one, for more stability. If there’s a patch of ice outside your door, you may not see it, and if you lean on one foot, you can easily lose your grip. Place both feet flat on the ground before getting up from your vehicle.
  • Beware of slippery floors. Winter weather doesn’t just cause hazards outside! When you enter a building in snowy weather, puddles can form near doorways as snow and ice melt off coats. Keep an eye on your surroundings when you enter a building and move carefully.

Call us if you were injured in a slip-and-fall accident that wasn't your fault.

These tips should help with preventing slips-and-falls, but even an abundance of caution isn’t a complete guarantee. If you slip and fall in the winter, you may suffer serious and lasting injuries. Whether your fall was in a commercial building or on a city sidewalk, you should contact an experienced slip and fall attorney to see if you have a case. The attorneys at Hach & Rose, LLP will examine the situation to determine who was at fault for your injury. Contact us today for a free and confidential consultation at 212-779-0057.
