What is rewarding about representing asbestos exposure victims?
Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a gentleman and his family. He lived upstate, he had immigrated to the United States from Europe with his wife and daughters in order to build a better life for his family. Unfortunately, unknown to him back in the 195os, he worked in a garage where work was being done with brake shoes that contained asbestos, and forty years later, he was diagnosed with mesothelioma.
I got to know him and his family through the legal process, through the investigation to determine how he was exposed, and through the deposition process. He was too sick to come in to our office, so we did all of the depositions in his home so he could be around his wife, his family, and his grandchildren, and over the course of that time, I got to know him and his family very well.
There got to be a point, though, unfortunately, where he came down with an infection. He was living in a small town, and the hospital in his area told him there was nothing that could be done, and they essentially sent him home to rest. He called me – his daughter, in fact, called me – and said “Russell, what can you do?” I got in touch with one of the top doctors in the city, we brought him down to the city, and over the course of the next six weeks, he received the best possible medical care, and he was able to rebound.
We took his case to trial; we were very successful, and his family received a great deal of compensation for his asbestos-related injuries. He was also able to live to see his family receiving that money and to see his fiftieth wedding anniversary. Well after the lawsuit was over, well after the trial was over, I still stayed in touch with his family, and he invited me up to his fiftieth wedding anniversary, and I was able to see him stand up and say a toast to his wife and to his family. This is something he never would have been able to do without the proper medical care, and I felt that we had a part in that.
That’s why I do the type of work that I do. I’m still in touch with his family. Whenever they come into town, we have dinner together. That’s why this is the only type of work that I’ve ever done.
