On October 18, Unilever issued a voluntary recall of dry shampoo aerosol products sold under brand names such as Suave, Dove, Nexxus, TRESemmé, and TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head). The affected products contain potentially elevated levels of benzene, a chemical compound known to cause cancer. The company manufactured and distributed the products listed in the recall prior to October 2021.
Benzene is a known human carcinogen, and according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it can lead to leukemia, blood cancer, blood disorders, and other health problems. Exposure can occur orally, through the skin, or through inhalation. The FDA has warned customers to stop using the recalled products. This most recent recall comes after another company, Procter & Gamble, issued a recall for over 30 aerosol haircare products in 2021, including numerous dry shampoos and conditioners, over concerns about benzene.
If you were diagnosed with cancer after exposure to benzene-containing dry shampoo products, you can demand compensation for the harm you have suffered. Product manufacturers have a legal responsibility to produce and sell products safe for human use and consumption and to warn consumers if a product is determined to be unsafe. When companies like Unilever and Procter & Gamble fail to uphold this obligation, their victims can hold them liable in civil court.
