Time Sensitive World Trade Center Update
Compensation Available to Construction Workers and People Employed in the Vicinity of the World Trade Center Site.
Deadline to Register: October 3, 2013
Workers may be entitled to compensation from the recently-opened James Zadroga Victim Compensation Fund, but the deadline to register with the fund, October 3, 2013, is fast approaching. If you do not register by the October 3rd deadline, you will forfeit your right to compensation for any WTC-related illnesses. The first 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) awarded over $1 billion in compensation to 2,680 injury claimants. However, it closed in 2003 despite the fact that many workers continued to be diagnosed with new respiratory illnesses. In January 2011, the President signed the James Zadroga Victim Compensation Fund into law. The purpose of the $2.7 billion Zadroga Fund is to provide medical care and compensation to anyone whose health deteriorated since 2003, even if they received compensation from the first VCF or the federal lawsuit that settled in 2010.
Any worker who worked below Canal Street and who is suffering from a respiratory, gastro-intestinal or sinus illness is presumed to have sustained his/her illness from exposure to the toxins at the World Trade Center site. And, the National Institute of Health (N.I.H.) has now linked 62 cancers to the toxic exposure, including cancers to the throat, nose, lungs, esophagus, stomach, colon, kidneys, liver, skin, and bladder. Blood cancers have also been linked by the N.I.H., including lymphoma and leukemia.
Again, you MUST register your claim specifically with the Zadroga VCF by October 3rd in order to be eligible to receive compensation for your WTC injuries and lost income. The fact that you may have registered for the first VCF, or with Workers Compensation or the WTC Health Registry, will not suffice. If you have not been diagnosed with any illness, you do not have to do anything now. However, please bear in mind that the deadline for making a claim for a new illness is two years from the date your symptoms begin. Hopefully, if you find yourself in that position, the VCF will still be open.
