Sheldon, NY – Update: Girl Hospitalized After Crash that Killed Three

Sheldon, NY (May 31, 2019) – According to authorities, another member of the family who was struck by a drunk driver is currently hospitalized as of Friday, May 31st. The crash, which claimed three lives, took place last Sunday, May 26th, at the intersection of Route 20A and Maxon Road.

Police stated that a minivan carrying a family of nine was struck by an intoxicated driver who blew through a stop sign at the intersection. The impact of the crash tragically killed a 1-year-old child, as well as the child’s mother and grandmother. Two other adults were reported to have been hospitalized for their injuries; however, new information states that another 4-year-old child is in intensive care.

The hospitalized 4-year-old is in critical condition and the family has been remaining in town since the accident. The driver who caused the crash was identified as Richard Sawicki, 20, of Lackawanna, and new details show that he used a fake ID to purchase alcohol before the crash. Sawicki has been charged with DWI and aggravated vehicular homicide, as well as reckless driving.
