Nichols, NY – State Worker Dies from Injuries Sustained in On-Duty Crash

Nichols, NY (March 19, 2019) – The man who was struck by a tractor-trailer while working last week was reported to have tragically died Monday night, March 18, according to authorities. Dennis “Matt” Howe, of Owego, was involved in a work-related accident on last Wednesday, March, 13 on Route 17 in the town of Nichols.

Police stated that Howe had been driving a DOT truck with a crew doing safety work along the highway when the truck was hit by a tractor-trailer. Police and emergency medical crews were called to the scene where they immediately transported Howe to Robert Packer Hospital in Pennsylvania to be treated for serious injuries.

After being hospitalized for nearly a week, Howe sadly succumbed to his injuries on Monday night. The truck driver was ticketed for violating the move over law. On Tuesday, March 19, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff on all government buildings in honor of Howe.
