Kingston, NY – Police Car and Disabled Vehicle Struck by Tractor-Trailer on Side of Thruway
Kingston, NY (March 14, 2019) – At approximately 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13th, authorities reported that a tractor-trailer struck both a police car and a disabled vehicle that the officer had been attending to on the side of the northbound lanes of Interstate 87.
Police stated that Trooper Thomas P. Hanigan had been inside his patrol car when the tractor-trailer struck the rear of the driver’s side. Hanigan had been pulled over to assist a disabled 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, of which two occupants were attending to a flat tire. The driver of the truck, identified as 54-year-old Michael Audit, of Napierville, Quebec, continued north after hitting the trooper car and slammed into the Tahoe.
The impact of the accident forced the Tahoe to strike Juana Herrera, 46, of Albany, and pushed her into a guardrail. Alejandro Espinosa, 56, of Albany, was able to leap over the guardrail to safety. Emergency medical crews arrived at the scene where they transported Trooper Hanigan and Herrera to Kingston Hospital. Both parties suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Audit was uninjured in the accident and ticketed for violating the “move over” law.
