Westbury, Long Island, NY – LIRR Train Hits Vehicle on Tracks and Kills Three near School Street

Westbury, Long Island, NY (February 26, 2019) – Around 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, February 26, three people were reported to have tragically lost their lives after two LIRR trains struck a vehicle that was on the tracks. The seriously fatal accident happened at the School Street crossing for reasons that are currently under investigation.

According to witnesses, the flashing lights had engaged before the vehicle involved attempted to swerve around the signs. A Manhattan-bound train subsequently struck the vehicle along with a westbound train that had been traveling at a higher rate of speed. Two front cars on the westbound train went off the rails, however, with one end of the train crushing about 30 yards of concrete during the collision.

Emergency medical crews verified that three people lost their lives in the accident while several others suffered minor injuries. Altogether, the eastbound train had been carrying approximately 100 passengers while the westbound train was responsible for about 800 passengers.
