Claremont Village, Bronx, NY (February 21, 2019) – Five children suffered injuries after their 15-year-old babysitter was reported to have left them alone in a Bronx apartment Wednesday afternoon. According to authorities, the fire broke out at around 1:20 p.m. in the kitchen of a seventh-floor apartment inside the Butler Houses, located on Webster Avenue.

The parents of the children who were hurt in the fire were initially questioned; however, it was later determined that they had left the children in the care of an unidentified 15-year-old babysitter. The babysitter was stated to have left the children alone for a brief amount of time in order to go to the store.

Authorities and emergency responders arrived at the scene after witnesses reported the children hanging from a window and shouting for help. The children, ages 3, 4, 7, 8, and 10, were all treated for minor injuries related to smoke inhalation and are all believed to be recovering at this time.

The fire is currently believed to have been a stove fire, although the official cause is under investigation at this time.
