Vestal, NY – Deputy Seriously Injured in Head-on Collision on Route 17

Vestal, NY (February 2, 2019) – A Sheriff’s Deputy from Broome County received serious injuries in a head-on collision that took place on Route 17 in Vestal.

The accident, according to police, happened when her patrol vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver. A Tesla struck the patrol vehicle of 32-year-old Kristy Botsford around 1 a.m.

The Tesla had been driven by Daniel Butash, who had originally been stopped along the shoulder and had his vehicle pointed in the wrong direction. He then took off when police vehicles responded.

Butash slammed into Botsford’s oncoming patrol vehicle. Botsford was trapped inside her vehicle following the incident and emergency responders had to use the “jaws of life” to free her.

Butash was taken to the hospital and treated for a variety of injuries. He was showing signs of intoxication and police continue to investigate. Charges are pending at this time.
