Pelham Bay, Bronx, NY – Update: Name of NYPD Officer Killed in Crash with Garbage Truck Released

Pelham Bay, Bronx, NY (January 17, 2019) – Police have confirmed the identity of the off-duty NYPD officer who was tragically killed in a head-on collision with a city garbage truck as 28-year-old Brian Kessler, of New Rochelle. The fatal accident happened at around 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday morning, January 16, as Officer Kessler was driving home after completing his night shift duties.

According to investigators, Officer Kessler was driving along Shore Road from the NYPD’s Rodman’s Neck Firing Range toward his home in New Rochelle when he collided with a city Parks Department garbage truck for unknown reasons. Emergency crews immediately rushed Kessler to Jacobi Medical Center where he was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities have stated that the roadway may have been icy and that bad accidents have happened in the same area before, however, the official cause of the crash is under investigation. The driver of the garbage truck remained at the scene and was treated for minor injuries.
