Ithaca, NY – Update: Identity of Driver Seriously Injured in Route 13 Crash Released

Ithaca, NY (January 8, 2019) – The female driver of a vehicle that was struck at the intersection of Route 13 and Lower Creek Road in Dryden has been identified by police as 24-year-old Jenna M. Swertfager, of Dryden. The accident took place at around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, January 3.

Police stated that 54-year-old Robert Gelinas Jr. had been driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata when he stopped in the intersection before making a left turn. Gelinas then failed to yield the right of way to a southbound vehicle and subsequently caused a collision. Police and paramedics were dispatched to the scene to evaluate the damages and render aid to any victims.

Swertfager, who is pregnant and had been operating the southbound vehicle, a 1999 Plymouth Breeze, was immediately transported to Cayuga Medical Center with at least minor injuries. Police stated that the Plymouth also caught fire as a result of the accident. A man, who was identified as Ithaca Police Chief Pete Tyler, was in the area at the time of the collision and assisted Gelinas before paramedics arrived.

Gelinas was not breathing and bleeding from the head when Chief Tyler began attempting to stabilize him. He was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse where he had been listed in critical condition.
