Queens, NY (November 7, 2018) – Police stated that a 90-year-old great grandmother who was loved by her community has been killed in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday morning, November 7. The incident occurred shortly before 7:00 a.m. when an unlicensed driver struck the victim with a van on 129th Street in Ozone Park.

The victim was identified as 90-year-old Isabel Duarte, who was reported to be crossing 129th Street at the time of the tragic accident. Duarte was considered to be the proud matriarch of her family.

Duarte was crossing the street merely a half-block from her home when the driver of a Ford Econoline Van crashed into her and fled the scene. Paramedics arrived on the scene and quickly transported Duarte to Jamaica Hospital where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

Police located the driver a few blocks away and identified him as 25-year-old Eber Baten. Baten was followed by a cab driver who witnessed the incident, ultimately leading to the arrest of the suspect. According to authorities, Baten did not have a license and was charged with unlicensed operation, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to yield, and failure to exercise due care.
