Melville, NY – Chain-Reaction Crash Occurs on Long Island Expressway

Melville, NY (October 20, 2018) – An oil tanker and seven motor vehicles were involved in a serious chain-reaction crash that took place on the Long Island Expressway. The accident was so severe that it closed down the eastbound lanes last night, October 19 and six people were transported to the hospital.

Suffolk County Police investigated the accident around 10:20 p.m. The collision started as traffic was slowing down for a car fire in the area around Exit 49. The vehicles struck one another, which set off a chain-reaction crash. Damaged vehicles could be seen at the accident scene and glass was all over the roadway.

The driver of the involved minivan was identified as 45-year-old Elizabeth Butler, who was able to get out of her vehicle on her own and was later found to be intoxicated at the time of the accident. She was treated for a variety of injuries and charged for driving while intoxicated. Others are at the hospital at this time.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
