Massena, NY – Man Killed in Fatal Work Accident at Eisenhower Locks

Massena, NY (October 16, 2018) – The death of a man from Canada is currently being investigated after the victim fell into the St Lawrence River while working on Tuesday morning, October 16. The accident took place at around 12:20 a.m. when 57-year-old Alfred Eshun, of Quebec, fell into the water while working at Eisenhower Locks.

According to authorities, Eshun had been working on the Canadian Bulk carrier, “Spruceglen” at the time of the accident. The carrier was being tied off as it was awaiting another ship that was in the locks. While being hoisted down to tie off the carrier, Eshun lost his balance and fell into the water. Two other employees entered the waters in order to assist Eshun and pull him from the water.

Eshun along with the other two employees were transported to Massena Memorial Hospital. Tragically, Eshun was pronounced dead at 2:02 a.m., shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The other two employees remained at the medical center to be treated for possible hypothermia.

The carrier that Eshun was tying off is remaining stationary in the locks while the investigation into this accident continues. Both the U.S. Coast Guard along with state police are leading investigations into the incident.
