Manorville, NY – One Dead and Four Injured After DUI Driver Crashes into Group of Boy Scouts

Manorville, NY (October 1, 2018) – A 12-year-old boy from Wading River has died today of injuries he suffered after an alleged DUI driver crashed into a group of boy scouts Sunday afternoon, September 30. A group of 18 youths and adults were walking along David Terry Road when 50-year-old Thomas Murphy slammed into the crowd with his 2016 Mercedes.

Shoreman’s Troop 161, a division of the Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts were hiking in the area at approximately 2:00 p.m. Murphy struck 5 members of the group as he was traveling south on David Terry Road, just north of Mill Road.

Murphy admitted to police that he had been drinking while playing golf Sunday morning, prior to getting behind the wheel. Seventh-grader, Andrew McMorris was among the scouting group walking down the roadway when he was struck by Murphy. Numerous emergency medical professionals were on the scene to assist the injured parties. Andrew was immediately taken to Stony Brook University Hospital by helicopter where he was tragically pronounced dead on Monday.

Murphy has been charged with one count of DWI and was arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip. One other victim was also flown to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries. Three others are currently at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead being treated for injuries that were classified as non-life-threatening.
