Clearing ice and snow from city sidewalks
After a snowstorm has ended, New York City law states that snow and ice must be cleared from sidewalks within four hours by the homeowners, business owners, or third parties responsible for clearing sections of city sidewalk. Though there are a few exceptions to this law, anyone who does not comply with this ordinance will be issued a $100-150 ticket for the first violation and anywhere up to a $350 fine for subsequent offenses. Though the ordinance has been aggressively enforced by the Department of Sanitation, many property owners still fail to clear their sidewalk and, thereby, put pedestrians at serious risk of slip and fall accidents.
