Concrete slab kills Manhattan construction worker

Fire officials reported that 27-year-old Rodalfo Vasquez-Galian, a construction worker from Jersey City, was declared dead at a Midtown Manhattan construction site after a thousand-pound concrete slab fell on top of him, The New York Times article stated on September 23.

Officials said Vasquez-Galian had been securing the foundations of a building next to the construction zone, which compromised the foundation of the neighboring building. This imbalance caused a concrete slab to fall and pin him at the site. Another construction worker was able to escape the path of the falling rock.

Due to concerns that the building at 320 West 37th Street may collapse entirely, over 100 people were evacuated. The construction site will eventually turn into a hotel owned by Sam Chang’s McSam Hotel Group. The company did not respond to inquiry by the time of the article.

The attorneys at Hach & Rose, LLP, are deeply sorry for this loss and extend their sincere condolences to the Vasquez-Galian family.
