NYS trooper dies in three-car accident in Thruway
The New York State Police reported that a serious car accident occurred on Monday, December 16 at around 8:25 p.m. on the eastbound part of Interstate 90 in Amsterdam, New York.
According to Superintendent Joseph D’Amico, three cars were involved in the accident, including that of New York State Trooper David Cunniff, who died in the crash after being critically injured. He was taken to Albany Medical Center for his life-threatening head wounds after the accident. He later died there.
The second vehicle was operated by 57-year-old Stone Creek resident Eric Heller, who was brought to the same hospital as Cunniff for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the police, Cunniff was inside his parked vehicle while it was behind a vehicle that he had pulled over near Exit 27 when a tractor trailer driven by 65-year-old Gary Blakley hit both cars, partially throwing Cunniff from his car and trapping Heller inside his.
