Freeport, NY: Parents/Child Hit by Drunk Driver in Ped. Accident

Freeport, NY (May 28, 2019) – A suspected drunk driver jumped a curb and struck a small family on Long Island, Monday afternoon, May 27th. The incident took place around 4:00 p.m. on West Merrick Road, according to police.
Authorities were called to the scene, where it was determined that 66-year-old Mitchell Messling was traveling along the aforenamed road in a BMW when he went onto the sidewalk and struck the three pedestrians. According to police, the victims were a family consisting of two parents and an 11-year-old boy.
A medical helicopter was called to the scene, where it airlifted the boy to Cohen Children’s Medical Center in Queens, and both of the parents were transported to Nassau Medical Center via ground ambulance. All injuries appear to be non-life-threatening at this time.
Messling was ultimately determined to have been driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. He has since been charged with second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree assault, and two counts of DWI, among other charges.
