Springfield Gardens, NY (May 6, 2019) – A devastating and mysterious tragedy was reported on Sunday night, May 5th, after a small child and her father sustained catastrophic injuries when the vehicle they were inside caught fire. The incident was reported to have taken place at around 9:00 p.m. near Baisley Pond Park.

According to authorities, an unidentified man was traveling in an Audi A6 sedan with his 3-year-old daughter in the back when the vehicle burst into flames. Immediately after the fire started, the man jumped out of the car and into a pond in the nearby park. Firefighters promptly responded and pulled 3-year-old Zoey Pereira from the vehicle and she was rushed to Jamaica Hospital in a police cruiser. She was tragically pronounced dead a short time later.

The girl’s father who had jumped into the pond was pulled out of the water and taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious but stable condition. Two propane cans and chains were found inside the vehicle, although the cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
