Crotona Park, Bronx, NY (March 13, 2019) – According to police, an elderly woman was tragically struck and killed by a school bus while crossing a street on Tuesday morning, March 12th. The victim, identified only as an 80-year-old woman, was hit at the intersection of Boston Road and Wilkins Avenue around 6:00 a.m.
Authorities stated that a yellow Chevrolet Express bus had been turning right onto Boston Road when it hit the victim, who was in the crosswalk at the time. The incident occurred for reasons that have not been stated; however, police confirmed that the driver of the bus, 52-year-old Rafael Ortiz, had been placed under arrest for failure to yield.
Emergency medical crews were immediately dispatched to the scene where they quickly transported the injured woman to St. Barnabas Hospital. Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced dead a short time after her arrival. There were no passengers on the bus at the time of the accident.
