Rego Park, Queens, NY (February 25, 2019) – A woman was tragically struck and killed by a taxi that was reported to have fled the scene on Sunday afternoon, February 24. The incident took place at around 4:30 p.m. along Queens Boulevard, in the vicinity of 63rd Drive.
According to authorities, 26-year-old Sherena Hundalini was struck and killed after a taxi swerved onto a sidewalk where Hundalini had been walking. The unidentified 55-year-old driver of the taxi was witnessed to have been driving erratically before striking Hundalini and attempting to flee the scene.
The driver of the taxi was reported to have turned the wrong way down 62nd Drive and then stopped the vehicle on his own. Good Samaritans in the area surrounded Hundalini as they waited for an ambulance while others chased after the driver.
Police stated that no charges have been filed against the driver who has been released from custody, subsequently sparking outrage amongst the victims’ family. There is currently no word as to why the driver lost control or if he was aware that he had hit anyone. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
