Flatiron District, Manhattan, NY (February 5, 2019) – According to authorities, a serious accident at a construction site in Midtown Manhattan resulted in the injuries of at least nine workers. The incident took place at around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, February 5, at Madison Avenue and East 29th Street in the Flatiron District.
While exactly what happened is unclear at this time, it was confirmed that the FDNY received a call concerning one worker when crews then arrived to find that multiple workers had fallen ill. According to authorities, high levels of carbon monoxide are currently being investigated as a possible cause after the workers were complaining of dizziness and nausea at the underground site.
The FDNY was accompanied at the scene by EMS who attended to several patients, two of whom were reported to have suffered more serious injuries than the others. The extent of all injuries is currently unknown, however, they appear to be non-life-threatening at this time.
Investigators believe that an underground gas-powered generator may be the source of the incident, although the investigation is ongoing.
