Mount Vernon, NY (January 29, 2019) – An apartment fire tragically claimed the life of one man while leaving one woman hospitalized on Monday evening, January 28. The fire was reported to have started at around 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of a multi-family structure located on South 1st Avenue in Mount Vernon.
According to authorities, firefighters were immediately dispatched to the scene where they were able to contain the fire to one apartment within a matter of minutes. Responders were able to rescue one woman from the kitchen who was said to be in cardiac arrest. The woman was taken to a first-floor landing where EMS administered CPR before transporting the victim to Mount Vernon Hospital. A man in his 60’s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
Smoke detectors in the apartment were present but did not go off, according to fire officials. At least 12 people were reported to have been evacuated from the building as authorities are actively investigating the cause of the fire.
