Garden City, Long Island, NY (January 24, 2019) – The driver of a vehicle was reported to have struck and killed a pedestrian, moments before crashing into two police cars and subsequently injuring a state trooper. The accidents were stated to have happened at around noon on Thursday, January 24, on the Meadowbrook State Parkway, near the Zeckendorf Boulevard Interchange.
According to authorities, New York State Troopers were accompanied by Nassau County Police at the scene of a single-car crash near Exit M2 in Garden City. While responding to the crash, a vehicle operated by Brett Belferder, 31, of Wantagh, struck two of the police vehicles. One trooper was reported to have sustained minor injuries in that accident.
A short time later, it was determined that Belferder had struck and killed a pedestrian, identified as 39-year-old Michael Patterson, of Freeport, only minutes before the collision. Patterson was stated to have been walking along the roadside when Belferder struck him. Police are not clear as to exactly what may have led to the unfortunate series of accidents at this time.
