Dannemora, NY (January 2, 2019) – A fire that occurred at an apartment house located at 1087 Cook Street in Dannemora Sunday night, December 30, is responsible for the injuries of two people, according to authorities. Richard Arroyo was reported to have suffered 3rd degree burns as his wife, Jess Desourdy sustained a broken bone in her back after jumping from a porch to avoid the flames.

According to Dannemora Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief, Butch Wing, the fire initially broke out on the first floor of the building. The two-story apartment building, which hosts four units, caught fire at around 4:45 p.m. Flames were already breaking through the roof of the structure by the time firefighters arrived.

The husband and wife were stated to have been watching television with their daughter, Shanika, 17, when they smelled the smoke from below their second-floor apartment. Emergency crews at the scene transported Arroyo to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington with 3rd-degree burns to his back, arms, and head. Desourdy suffered a broken bone in her back, and Shanika managed to escape with minor wounds.

Medical responders also assisted two people for smoke inhalation but there was no word on the conditions of any other tenants. Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire.
