Chinatown, Manhattan, NY (December 19, 2018) – A three-alarm fire ripped through a building in Lower Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon, December 19, that resulted in the injuries of two people, including a 96-year-old woman. According to authorities, the fire began at around 12:30 p.m. at an apartment building located at 113 Mott Street in Chinatown.

Approximately 150 firefighters responded to the scene of the fire which had engulfed the third and fourth floors of the building. According to Deputy Assistant Chief, Michael Gala, several apartments caught fire as the flames broke out on the third floor and rapidly spread to the fourth.

A 96-year-old woman along with her 42-year-old home attendant had to be rescued from the fourth floor as they were hiding in a bathroom. The victims were immediately rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital suffering from cardiac arrest.

It took firefighters approximately 90 minutes to contain the fire, and no further information has been made available at this time. Police are currently investigating the cause of this incident.
