Ghent, NY (November 28, 2018) – A collision that occurred between two vehicles, including a Columbia County Deputy’s patrol car, on Sunday night, November 25, resulted in the injuries of two people. According to police, the two injured parties have now been identified as Deputy Peter Merante and Clifford Jean-Baptiste.
Deputy Merante was stated to have been driving his patrol car on Route 9H, on his way to a call concerning a shooting, when he was struck by a 2019 Chevrolet being operated by Jean-Baptiste. The crash occurred at around 5:45 p.m. near County Route 20 in Ghent, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Merante was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson to be treated for his injuries. Authorities stated that the Deputy had sustained injuries to his hip, leg and back. Jean-Baptiste, along with one passenger in his vehicle identified as, Melissa De Pestri, were also taken to the hospital with unconfirmed injuries as they were later released.
Jean-Baptiste was ticketed for failure to yield right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. No further information has been made available.
