Rochester, NY, November 21, 2018) – Police officers in Rochester have reported a serious pedestrian accident after a man in a motorized wheelchair was struck by a van on Tuesday afternoon, November 20. The accident which left the victim seriously injured took place around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of North Clinton Avenue and Clifford Avenue.
According to authorities, the victim who has been identified only as a 62-year-old man from Rochester was crossing the intersection at a crosswalk when he was hit. 44-year-old Shawn Schwalm, also of Rochester, was reported as the unlicensed driver of the van that struck the victim.
Emergency medical crews accompanied police at the scene in order to render aid to the injured man. The victim was immediately transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
Schwalm has been charged with failure to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, as well as unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. No further information has been released at this time as police are likely involved in a thorough investigation.
