Dix Hills, NY (November 20, 2018) – On Monday night, November 19, emergency vehicles were responding to a motor vehicle crash when a tractor-trailer slammed into them, subsequently causing injuries. The accident was reported to have taken place around 11:50 p.m. while fire crews and police were gathered at the scene.
According to officials, the 18-wheeler involved was traveling along the Long Island Expressway near exit 51 when it crashed into the rear-end of a firetruck that had several firefighters aboard. The impact of the crash caused the tractor-trailer to jackknife before hitting a highway patrol car.
Three people were stated to have suffered injuries as a result of the accident. One firefighter was immediately transported to Huntington Hospital as a patrol officer and the truck driver were both taken to a separate hospital in the area. All injuries are believed to have been minor at this time.
The driver of the truck was cited for failure to move over for emergency vehicles as the truck is currently being held for a safety check. A resulting fuel spill was cleaned up by the Department of Environmental Conservation.
