Melrose, Bronx, NY (November 9, 2018) – An incident in which a manhole cover exploded underneath a parked car has been reported in the Melrose section of the Bronx Friday night, November 9. The explosion was stated to have taken place on East 156th Street at approximately 7:30 p.m.
Reports stated that police had been called to the area of 510 East 156th Street shortly after 7:00 p.m. to investigate smoke pouring out from a manhole in the roadway. While police and civilians were nearby, the manhole suddenly exploded and flung debris in all directions. Five people, including two NYPD officers, were injured as a result of the explosion.
Emergency medical crews attended to the victims as the three civilians were transported to a local hospital. It was not stated as to whether or not the officers involved were also hospitalized, however, all injuries seem to be relatively minor at this time.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of this incident.
