Syracuse, NY (October 26, 2018) – A van was reported to have struck a young child at the intersection of East Dominick and First Streets this morning, October 26, according to officials. The unfortunate accident took place at around 11:00 a.m. in the 400 block, in front of the Rome Rescue Mission.
According to witnesses, the child who is under 5-years-old ran into the street while the van had been heading eastbound on the roadway. Emergency medical crews along with police were immediately called to the scene to assist the child and evaluate the accident.
The young child was quickly transported to Mercy Flight helicopter at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park by AmCare Ambulance. The severely injured child was immediately air-lifted to a hospital in Syracuse where his current condition is unknown.
The speed limit is 30 mph on that roadway, and witnesses stated that the van struck the child after he darted into the street while walking with his mother. Police have not released the identity of the child and the accident remains under investigation at this time.
