Crown Heights, NY (October 15, 2018) – The victim who was struck and tragically killed by a garbage truck last Thursday, October 11, in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn has been identified as Alberto Leal, 37. The accident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue.
The operator of the garbage truck responsible for the accident was recently identified as Aaron Gilchrist. Police stated that Gilchrist has been charged with several moving violations for his role in the fatal crash. One of those charges is for driving the wrong way down a one-way street.
Leal was struck by the garbage truck at or near the Crown Heights intersection. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene but, unfortunately, Gilchrist was immediately pronounced dead. Gilchrist remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities.
There are still no conclusive details pertaining to the exact events that led to the collision at this time. The Department of Sanitation along with police are both working independently and together on investigations into the cause of the crash.
