East Village Explosion Causes Partial Building Collapse and Fire

Posted on Thursday, March 26th, 2015 at 4:01 pm

Earlier this afternoon an explosion caused the partial collapse of a building in the East Village and a subsequent seven alarm fire. Sadly, as many as 30 people have been reported injured. Several individuals who suffered serious burns were taken to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital / Weill Cornell Medical Center, while another injured individual was taken to Bellevue Hospital after being rendered unconscious.

The force of the blast was significant enough that passersby on the street were struck with debris, resulting in lacerations. An initial 911 call reported the incident as a gas explosion, and some day laborers reported that they had been working on a gas line at the location. Initially, the resulting fire was declared a two-alarm fire by the New York Fire Department, but it was quickly upgraded to seven alarms.

We will continue to monitor this situation and report on any updates as they become available. Our thoughts go out to all those affected by this terrible incident.
