A new report from New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer showed that there has been an increase in playground-related personal injury claims in the Upper West Side over the past 10 years, StrausMedia reported on March 9.
According to Stringer, annual claims have risen by 53% over the last 10 fiscal years – from a low of 45 in 2005 to a high of 69 in 2014 – most of which ended in settlements that altogether costed the city $20.6 million.
The report says the Parks Department has yet to show initiative when it comes to making sure that local playgrounds are safe; for the first four months of the current fiscal year, the rate of “acceptable” play equipment dropped to 91% from 93% in 2014.
