Building collapse at Staten Island car dealership kills one

Posted on Monday, December 8th, 2014 at 10:59 am

Forty-three-year-old construction worker Delfino Jesus Velazquez Mendizabal died when a section of the mezzanine level inside the Dana Ford Lincoln dealership collapsed at around 8:15 a.m. on November 28, The New York Times reported.

The dealership where Mendizabal was working was located at 226 West Service Road in Staten Island. The New York Fire Department fire officials said Mendizabal had been working with three other construction workers when the incident happened. The other three were able to escape from the building and were not seriously injured in the construction accident.

The New York City Buildings Department cited Formica Construction, Inc., Mendizabal’s employer, for two violations at the site in 2013.

According to court documents, one of the construction company’s owners, Kenneth Formica, spent 16 weekends in prison after he pleaded guilty in 2007 to criminally negligent homicide and told authorities that he knew that a trench he helped dig was unsafe, which ultimately caused the death of a worker who became buried inside it after it collapsed.
