Two people were killed on Interstate 280 in East Orange, New Jersey at around 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27. A dump truck slammed into a Honda sedan which exploded as it came into contact with five other vehicles.
Emergency response personnel, police officers, and firefighters responded to the scene of the accident. The driver of the truck and others in secondary vehicles only suffered minor injuries. However, both occupants of the Honda could not be rescued from the flames in time.
Prelimary investigations are considering whether a mechanical malfunction in the dump truck, owned by Direct Waste Services, contributed to the incident. A toxicology report is also pending.
Three other lives were claimed on New Jersey highways that day.
