How does your experience in the construction field influence how you practice law?

David Cheverie talks about how his experience in the construction field influences how he practices law. If you or a loved one has been injured on a construction site, contact a personal injury lawyer from Hach & Rose, LLP by calling (212) 779-0057.

Well, I grew up with a strong background in the unions. My grandfather was a shipyard worker, my father was a labor lawyer, and the day I turned 18, I joined the Union. I started with the Operating Engineers, doing survey work, and then I joined the Laborers Local 230 out of Connecticut, which I’m still a full booked member.

Throughout my experience working in construction, you really recognize how dangerous the industry can be and the shortcuts that can be taken if the proper safety measures aren’t put in place. You know, doing demolition for example, I spent a few years in that industry and the dangers of the falling objects. I saw a lot of individuals get hurt, including myself at one point, and it was because there weren’t certain safety measures put in place to protect the workers.

It was really one of the main reasons I went into law. I worked on a lot of different job sites as a laborer with Local 230 that were both Union. All the jobs were Union jobs but however, some of them had union and non-union workers on the site, and certain companies would take certain shortcuts which would put the workers in danger. And there was no reason that that should be done. And as a result of that, that’s one of the main reasons I went into law – to try to protect and help the workers.
